Downside of the nook

Posted by Jill Myles in Blog - Other People's Books

So, ever since getting my nook several weeks ago (or has it been a few months? I forget), I've pretty much read exclusively on it. Paper has not crossed my hands since buying it. I figure I'm telling myself that I'm trying to get my $250 out of it, but...who are we kidding? I use the nook because I am super lazy and it can instantly download any book within seconds.

The downside of the nook?  No more early releases. It's true - I confess. I'm one of those horrible people that starts scouring the shelves of the local bookstore a week or two in advance of an eagerly-anticipated book, all in the hopes that some employee might slip a copy or two onto the shelves early. I scan the grocery store, hoping that the distributor has ignored the lay-down dates and stuck the newest books out in advance! Release date? Shmelease date! Gimme my books now!

This, of course, does not work on the nook. It's release day or nothing for them, and they don't release the files early. This makes me a VERY SAD READER. I mean, as an author, I should rejoice in the hard release date for e-files because it makes it that much easier for someone to hit the lists, right? And I want my friends to do well.

But the reader in me? Wants your book NOW.  F&ck waiting! I think there should be a program where we can pay a dollar or two extra and get your book a week or two in advance. I'd pay it. A dollar buys me a candy bar...or my Meljean Brook fix a week earlier. I know which way I'd rather spend it. ;)

So has anyone else felt this impatience with e-files on the nook or Kindle, or am I the only one feeling the pain of being forced to open Christmas presents on Christmas Day?

  • I feel your pain. But having the book at midnight on release day is much better than when the publisher decides to put off the ebook release a week to a month AFTER the paperback! That is infuriating!

With that said, there are still some books that I "have to have" in paperback b/c I collect the series that way. Meljean's Guardian and Nalini's Psy/Changling are two such series. And they BOTH have a book release on July 5. I'll be on vacation with no major bookstore/grocery store, etc. in sight. So what did I do... Preordered from Amazon! I hope that the books get delivered on release date! If not, I may have to buy on Kindle AS WELL!

I get super agitated when I cannot find a book in the stores. I NEED the book NOW and will stand for nothing short of coming home with it this instant. BUT, when the times call for me to suffer and that book is nowhere in sight I go home and order off Amazon...and wait...impatiently...for the 2-5 days it takes to arrive in the mail.
This is normally what causes me to purchase AT LEAST the first two books in a series before I even read word one in book one.
One day I may own a kindle for this reason alone, but I just love holding the books and turning the pages too much to go all electronic. (And none of the e-readers has backlighting yet)
However, Jill, you have now given me a new obsession. I had no idea there was such a thing as "accidental early releases"! Is it possible this is why the damn books are never on the shelf when I fly into the stores on release day??? Grrrr.

Yes... I share your pain. I - ahem - review, which gets me some goodness ahead of time. But not everything gosh darn it!

So I use "froogle" and scan every freaking web store for the ones I must have (oh my preciouses).

Other than that, I am mostly ebook now too.
