Frequently Asked Questions About Jill

How can I contact you?

You can always email me at jillmyles AT gmail.com.

Who is your agent?

Holly Root at the Waxman Agency.

How did you get started writing?
When I was a kid, people praised me for my short stories that I wrote. I still have the one I wrote about Loch Ness when I was eight. And then there was that time that the teacher told us to write a 1 page story about an elephant…and I turned in twenty pages. My best friend, you see, had written five pages, and I wanted the teacher to love me more than her.

So that’s how I started. I’m competitive and slightly crazy.

Beyond that, the next 15 years blurs into a madness of high school and lots of fanfiction. God, I wrote a lot of fanfiction back then. And then when I hit the age of 23 or so, I thought I’d try my hand at a novel. And the rest was history.

I have an idea for a book. Can you write it and we can split the profits 50/50?

I’m afraid not. Your ideas suck. Hahaha! Just kidding. Seriously though, the answer is still no.

Have you done any of the stuff you write about?

You mean like turn into a succubus?

What are a few of your favorite books?

I’m horribly picky, and I tend to glom onto certain genres for weeks/months/years without switching. That being said, there are probably a few books that I’d love to take to a desert island with me and be happy to re-read over and over again. These are:

* Sara Donati, Into the Wilderness

* Julie Garwood, Saving Grace

* Judith McNaught, A Kingdom of Dreams

* Jude Deveraux, The Taming

* Piers Anthony, With a Tangled Skein

* Anne McCaffrey, Dragonsdawn

* The entire ELFQUEST comic-book run.

* Anything Ilona Andrews.

* Anything Meljean Brook.

* Anything Kresley Cole.

* D’aulaires’ Norse Myths and Greek Myths

* Gustav Davidson’s A Dictionary of Angels

* Andrew Lang’s Fairy Books (Blue, Green, etc)

* Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine

How many books did you write before you became published?

GENTLEMEN PREFER SUCCUBI was the fifth book I wrote. The first three were rottenly bad. The next one was only moderately bad, but the heroine was too shrill.

What’s your writing process? Plotter or Pantser?

I’m kind of a hybrid. I wing it for the first three chapters or so, maybe longer. Then once I’ve figured out where I’m going, I stop and bullet-point out the rest of the plot. That usually works best for me.

How do you feel about fanfic?

Knock yourself out. My only rules are:

–– Acknowledge me as the creator.
–– Don’t sell it for money.
–– I cannot and will not read it because of legal reasons, so please do not send it to me.

That being said, monkey no see, monkey no care.

How can I get a review copy?

I’m sorry to say that I don’t get review copies to send out, electronic or otherwise. When you see it on the shelf, well, that’s when I see it too! Other than buying a copy, you can contact Pocket Books (a division of Simon & Schuster) and ask them for a review copy of my books.

FAQ About the Succubus Diaries

Did you know that the word ‘succubi’ is a plural of succubus?

Yes! I did! There are multiple succubi in the series, so I feel comfortable throwing it around in the title.

So Jackie is a demon, right?

Bzzt, wrong. In my setting, a succubus is created by a vampire draining a mortal (the kiss of the dark side) and a fallen angel having sex with said mortal (the kiss of the light side). This creates another immortal with a bastardized version of each one’s curses.

What do you mean by curses?

Fallen angels (also known as Serim) are cursed to wander the earth eternally. Once a month, they must shag a partner rotten and bring them to orgasm. Such a curse, I know. I know. But there’s more to it than just that. As for vampires, they are cursed to crave blood on a nightly basis. Both are cursed to live in eternally rotating cycles – fallen angels in the daytime, vampires at night, with little overlap.

So basically Jackie is a Mary Sue with a Magic Vagina?

Yes and no. I wanted to play with the concept of the woman that is transformed into being supernaturally hot. I gave her the most ridiculous attributes that I could think of – huge boobs, red hair, eyes that change color. And then I wanted to play with the trope a little from there. She’s not super powerful. She saves her own ass, but not necessarily the day. And a lot of men lust after her, but to someone that is used to using her mind, it’s downright irritating.

What kind of supernatural creatures are in your books?

Book one focuses on the following spectrum, in order from ‘Good’ to ‘Evil’ (with succubi as the neutral party):

Angels
Fallen Angels (Serim)
Succubi
Vampires
Demons

Since the story follows Jackie and sees the world through her eyes, more supernaturals are introduced in book 2 and 3.

Your angels don’t act like real live angels.

I know. I bet my vampires don’t act like any real live vampires, either.

How many books are you planning on in the series?

It is hard to say. There is a definite end to the current story arc, so I can’t see that carrying beyond book 3 or a book 4, if my publisher wants it. If they want more than that, I’d be happy to write more in the series and have a few tricks up my sleeve to change things up for Jackie’s world.

So you’re going to drag the love-triangle thing out forever?

Absolutely not. Trust me that there will be a resolution that all parties will find satisfying.

FAQ About Midnight Liaisons

So what’s this series about?
This is a series of stand-alone romance novels set in North Texas. The average human is not aware of paranormal creatures, but there are a few that work on the fringes. In this world, werewolves mostly keep to their packs, vampires stick to their clans, and the loner shifters (such as cats, bears, minks, etc) have formed a business agreement – the Paranormal Alliance – in lieu of a pack.

What is Midnight Liaisons?
Midnight Liaisons is the name of a hands-on dating agency that caters exclusively to paranormals. Just like any dating agency, the customers declare what sort of creature they want to date. The employees at the agency then provide them with a match and arrange the date, and then follow-up afterward to ensure that all parties are well behaved. Supernatural dynamics are tricky to navigate, and one could unintentionally start a war between were-dingos and were-jaguars by hooking up the wrong people.

Who is the main character?
There will be new characters in every book (like in traditional romance). The series itself is very loosely connected to allow for a happily-ever-after in every book, rather than a series feel (like the Succubus Diaries). The first book features a human, Bathsheba Ward, and the leader of the Paranormal Alliance, who happens to be a were-cougar.

When does this come out?
Not until August 2011. Patience, young grasshopper.

Can you tell me more about the series?
I can as we get closer to publication! Check back.
